Linda Crowford asked:

Your Xbox is without doubt, one of the precious possessions that you are proud of, but it is not infallible. Since its release in April 2005, Xbox 360, the predecessor to Xbox, has met with an overwhelming response. It is the only gaming console to have released in 36 countries, on the very first year of its release. Aside from the popularity of the gaming console, there are a few common problems in the system which calls for an Xbox repair. Though it does not affect every Xbox console, one cannot ignore that the fact that this problem does exist.

It has now been mentioned that 30 percent of Xbox consoles do suffer from a hardware problem at one point of time, which warrants an Xbox repair. One of the problems is overheating; the Xbox console heats up after a certain point of use and if not cooled, can affect the processing units, mother board and the circuitry. Also this thing is not covered under three year extended warranty offered by Xbox. The extended warranty only covers hardware failure that is depicted by “red ring of death” characterized by three flashing lights around the power button. Prevention is certainly better than cure, and it is better for your console if you keep the Xbox in a place which allows air to flow in and make the system breathe, rather than keeping it in a closed cabinet. Another way to prevent heat buildup is to keep the console free of dust. This way you will save the cost of an Xbox repair.

The hardware failure of Xbox 360 or the aforementioned “red rings of death” can be attributed to faulty system design or manufacturing issues. Since it is a common problem with Xbox 360, Microsoft has given an extended warranty up to three year for the “red ring of death” issue. However the extended warranty does not cover issues like one flashing red light, overheating, error E74 and such other errors. There is also out of warranty Xbox repair service that carries a price tag to it. All Xbox repairs entail a one year warranty period from the date of the repair or the continuance of the original warranty, which ever lasts for a longer period.

In case, you do not have the patience to get your Xbox repair done because of the longer periods of waiting (three to four weeks of turn-around time), you can perform the Xbox repair yourself, provided you take help from an online comprehensive Xbox repair guide, which shows you videos on how to repair your Xbox console step by step.

xBox 360 3 Red lights Repair Reviews

Frank Jordan asked:

Almost every Xbox 360 users will come across a common Xbox 360 problem – 3 red lights. Some called it as “Red Ring of Death” (RRoD). There are different codes that flash on the power switch to let you know what is wrong with your console. “Red Ring of Death” means you have a general hardware error. This problem has been actively discussed everywhere especially in the Xbox 360 related problem. Although 3 red lights is a common issue of Xbox 360 and a lot of complaints & hates everywhere, people still buy Xbox 360 console as it has many awesome game titles.

Although Microsoft did not published the main root cause of the problem, there are a lot of people taking their own risk of breaking the Xbox 360 console to find the root cause. By understanding the possible root causes, we can make the proper correction. Here are the summarized of the reasons as to why the Xbox 360 3 Red Lights happened:

1. Insufficient Air Circulation

Xbox 360 produces hot air when it is on. Therefore it is always recommended to place your console at an open air area to allow the proper airflow. So, if possible, try not to place your console in closed cabinet when you are using it.

2. Power Brick

If you observe the Xbox 360′s power brick, you will find a LED, which indicates the health of the power brick. If the power brick is overheated, the LED will change to red. It is worth getting the power brick on an open air area to allow the proper airflow. This is similar to the 1st root cause. Try to place the power brick at open air area which cannot be reached by children.

3. GPU Soldering Joints & The X-clamp

Many people claims that this is the main root cause of 3 red lights problem. When a gamer playing a Xbox 360 game for long hours, heat will slowly melting the GPU soldering joints. Due to the X-clamp design, it causes the GPU soldering joints becoming loose slowly and this is the time where the screen freeze happened intermittently. Eventually you will get the 3 red lights problem.

If you read the three root causes above carefully, you will notice that all these root cause are under a same category, which is “Overheated”. Therefore, if you are owning a new Xbox 360, which does not have the 3 red lights or any hardware problem, it is advisable to place your console at an open-air area or cool air-conditioned environment. You can also buy an additional external Xbox 360 cooling fan. The cooling fan does not cost much, but it will help to prolong your console’s lifespan. If possible, turn off your console for 30 minutes after playing game for about 1 hour.

xBox 360 3 Red lights Repair Reviews

Stephan Vrugteman asked:

Looking for a way to get rid of your 3 red lights problem on your Xbox 360? You’ve got 3 ways to do this. You either send your console over to Microsoft and let them fix it, you send it to a repair shop or you will do it actually by yourself with the use of a repair guide. Can’t choose? Let’s compare them!

Sending the Xbox 360 3 red lights error to Microsoft

This might sound like a good idea, right? But is this really that great? I don’t think so… This is because of 2 reasons. The money it will cost you, and the time it takes to get it repaired. You see, when you send your troubleshooting console over to Microsoft, they will ask you $150 for the repairs. This is only if your warranty has been expired. It’s quite expensive, right?

Another major downside on this is the waiting times. This option can be very time consuming. The waiting times can go up to 1 month. When you do this, be prepared, because your Xbox 360 will be gone for at least 2 weeks.

Sending my Xbox 360 with the 3 red lights error to a Repair Shop

This option basically comes down as the same as sending it to Microsoft. Although, it’s slightly better.

When you send your console to a repair shop, it’s high likely that you’ll have to pay $75 for the repairs. Also, the waiting times may be slightly better than sending it to Microsoft, but it’s still very long. You’ll have to wait for at least 1 week, and it could go up to 3 weeks.
So this option isn’t very good either, but there’s 1 more option left!

Repair the Xbox 360 3 red light error by… yourself!

This is actually the best option that you’ve got. It will be cheap, fast and it will be a guaranteed repair… Why? Because when you do this, you will use an Xbox 360 3 red lights repair guide. This way, you will get step by step instructions so you will know how to repair your console very quickly.

When you do this, you won’t have to pay $75 or $150 for the repairs, and there’s no need to wait for weeks either! It’s high likely that you’ll repair your console within 1 day… That’s right, within 1 day! How amazing is that?

xBox 360 3 Red lights Repair Reviews

Stana Rosic asked:

The red ring of death is a process that your malfunctioning Xbox 360 results to, to signify that you have a faulty system. Around the parameters of the power button there are 4 lights, that when work properly, will signify an active controller by showing a green light. If there are any faults with your console, you could see as little as one light show red instead of green. This problem could increase to as many as four red lights at a time. Each amount of lights indicate a different problem.

What Each Light Means Inside The Red Ring Of Death

1 light – simply means that the general hardware of your console is having simple troubleshooting errors and might need some necessary attention.

2 lights – this happens when your game console over heats due to an extensive amount of game play. This problem is a bit less stressful and can easily be fixed by postponing game play and unplugging the device until the system has had adequate time to cool down. A way to prevent this simple complication is to monitor the amount of usage of the console. I suggest no more than 3 hours of game play over an 8 hour period. This includes DVDs as well, as they tend to overheat your Xbox 360 at an even faster rate because it uses more bandwidth, causing the GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) to overheat.

3 lights – this could be a symbol of quite a bit of malfunctions with your game console. The three lights is what most people refer to as “The Red Ring of Death”.

4 lights – this is the one that you freak out the most when you see it, but is the easiest one to fix. When you have four lights that are red you simply have your AV cable loose. The only true science behind that is to check to see if the cable has physical damage, if so, I strongly advise replacement. If the AC cable is in good condition simply check the see if the connection is secure. Restart the console and you should be back to normal.

Repair Methods To Avoid When Fixing The Red Ring of Death

Don’t listen to the You Tube videos that advise you to wrap towels around your console to overheat. That is a very dangerous exercise and can lead to permanent damage to the console. If the purpose of a gaming system is to overheat, the makers of the product would not put specifically placed ventilation holes in the cover of the system to reduce heat. Do not follow the towel advice.

Don’t send your system to the factory because of multiple reasons. First of all, the factory does not fix your system and then send you your system back. They simply ship out refurbished ones as they are fixed, and how do you know that the one that has been shipped to you isn’t in worse condition as the one that you sent them. Secondly, the wait for the return of the system is at minimum 8 weeks, but it could take as long as 16 weeks. The final reason behind why I don’t suggest you sending your console back to the factory is because it will cost you about 200 bucks to have it fixed.

XBOX 3 Red Lights Repair

William Turner asked:

If you have the 3 red lights flashing on your Xbox 360 then you have probably rushed online to find out what has happened to your console and how you can fix it. Well the bead news is that if you have 3 red flashing lights it means that you have a general hardware failure and will need to get it repaired.

The problem happens as the GPU and the CPU take far too much heat while you are playing your games, and this is not really down to where you keep your Xbox but more to do with the design of the Xbox and there simply not being enough room to displace the heat!

So what can you do to fix it?

Well to get rid of the red flashing lights you have 2 choices and that is to send it back to Microsoft and have them repair it for you or perform the repair at home yourself.

The first choice which is to send it back is not a bad one and the only downside of this method is the fact that it takes about 6 weeks to get your Xbox back to you and this can be a long time to go without your games! Also if you have any other errors apart from the 3 red lights then you will have to pay about $140 for Microsoft to repair it for you.

The second choice is a good one if you are outside your warranty or do not want to wait for up to 6 weeks to get it fixed and what you normally get with a good Xbox 360 Repair guide is a collection of video files and text that will illustrate the steps you need to take to fix the problem. As long as you make sure that you get one with full customer support and a guarantee then you cannot go wrong and if it does not work for you you can always send it back to Microsoft.

I hope this article has told you more about why the 3 red lights happens and the 2 best choices you have to repair it fast.

Happy Gaming!

xBox 360 3 Red lights Repair Reviews

David Crane asked:

There are many gamers who face the problem with Xbox and hence you will find many forums discussing the various means to repair Xbox 360 3 red lights. You can find many online solutions but not all work and some even damage your system further which then is not fixable.

So, ensure that you go for the right solutions. Few basic tips to repair Xbox 360 3 red lights as below:

1. First ensure that your Xbox is not being overheated. As this is one of the most common problems which leads to flashing of the red lights. Over heating happens when you continuously play for an extended period of time. The heat gets build up due to lack of cooling device. Allow your Xbox to cool down for it to resume back but this can be temporary solution but should work though.

2. Second option is to send it to Microsoft for repair but this option is generally not very feasible as it is time consuming and requires efforts to ship console to them. If your Xbox is under a warranty period than the repair will be free of cost.

3. Final tip is to fix it yourself. I can’t say more, it sounds difficult but trust me it is very easy to do, even if you’re not the usual ‘handy man’. You will require a screwdriver and a flat bench. Just take apart your system and replace the broken parts with the new one. That’s all! Also you can find a online guide which will guide you throughout the various steps.

XBOX 3 Red Lights Repair

Robert Bush asked:

If you want to fix the Xbox 360 3 Red Lights Of Death…Please read over this article at least once before beginning the repair. Also, please follow the step-by-step instructions carefully and take your time with each step.

Before you start you will need.

* 1 paper towel

* Artic Silver 5 thermal compound

* Torx 8 ***** driver

* Torx 10 ***** driver

* Flathead ***** driver

* Any small poker

* Thermal compound remover/ or the Artic Silver 5 Kit it has the thermal compound and the cleaning kit

* Pliers

* Alcohol

Step One: Unplug Your Xbox 360 Powers Source

Place your fingers into the USB ports, and then place your thumb on the bottom of the Xbox 360 console and pull the face plate completely off.

Step Two:

Now, flip the Xbox on its side and take a close look at the holes located on the top and bottom of each side. If you look closely, you can see the gray tabs towards the ends and in the center of the Xbox 360. These gray tabs are what hold the top and bottom pieces on the Xbox 360. To remove the top and bottom gray pieces, you will need a small pointed object .

Step Three:

Find the gray plastic tabs by poking down into the holes, and then use your pry tool to very carefully push down and pry out the gray top/bottom cover, Both pieces have three clips per side, and six per piece. In order to remove the top gray piece, you will need to remove the rubber pad. This is the only rubber pad you will have to remove. If you are careful you can remove by prying on the front of the gray cover. Please do not force it or you may break the tabs.

Step Four:

Please take a close look at the back of the Xbox 360. On the right and left side there are small notches that will require a closer inspection. You will need a small ***** driver or a remaining catches. This is probably the trickiest part of the whole process, so please take your time and be careful! thin probe tool. Using the probe, start on the left side (near power supply socket) push the notch into the Xbox until you hear a click. Then use a ***** driver to keep the two sides apart. Once the left side is done, start on the right side doing the same thing.

Step Five:

Please switch around to the front of the Xbox and undo the four catches. Once you have them all separated, pull off the bottom of the Xbox 360, be very gentle. Now, from the bottom of the Xbox 360 carefully flip the Xbox back over. Remove the DVD button arm assembly to keep it out of your way. You just need to gently pry it off the black plastic guide. Next, remove the top cover, watch the DVD button latch! (it is seated in the front metal casing) Disconnect the SATA connector from the motherboard and lift the DVD drive out of the case.

Step Six:

Grab your Torx driver set. Using a T10 and T8 for this part of the disassembly. Gently unscrew the six T10 screws, and then use the T10 to unscrew all other screws. Now, unscrew the black screws with the T8 driver. Not all Xbox 360′s have the same color screws. You will have to remove all screws!

Step Seven:

You will now remove the white airflow guide. To remove the white plastic air guide, locate the notch on the top outward side. Insert your probe or small ***** driver, and carefully pry the air guide out. It should come out very smoothly.

Step Eight:

Next up you will need to disconnect the power for the cooling fans. Use your small ***** driver or small probe tool to pry the fan catches out from the metal guard. This will allow you to remove the fan device from the Xbox 360 Casing.

Step Nine:

You will need to now look at the front of your Xbox 360 and locate the RF module. Remove the white plastic power cover. It pops right off by gently pulling on the plastic piece. Remove the three screws from the front circuit board (aka RF module). Once the screws are removed, you will be able to slide the RF module off the Xbox 360 with a gentle pull. Be careful not to touch any exposed circuits! Next, carefully lift the motherboard out of the Xbox 360 casing.

Step Ten

Now with the motherboard removed, flip it over and find the two X connectors on the bottom of it. These are what hold the heat sinks on the CPU & GPU. Be EXTREMELY careful when removing these. It takes a little force, this could destroy your 360 if not applied properly and carefully. Just keep VERY GENTLY trying each one until you get them to release. I myself like to use a small pointy probe tool, carefully inserting it into each one until they release. I also try to stay away from the tiny black memory chips when doing this. Just remember take your time and be very careful and you will have no problems with this step.

Step Eleven:

In this step you will be removing the thermal compound from the GPU and CPU and Heat sinks You can remove the thermal compound with the end of a plastic Q-tip and Rubbing Alcohol (slow) or the Arctic Cleaning Kit with a soft cloth (fast). Clean the GPU and CPU with thermal compound cleaning solution and then wipe the GPU and CPU with alcohol

After you’ve removed the thermal compound you need to wipe it down really good so that the GPU, CPU and Heat sinks Shine. To make the GPU and CPU shine dab a little bit of rubbing alcohol onto a paper towel and wipe them done.

DO NOT touch the GPU, CPU or Heat sinks with your fingers after they are all shiny.

Step Twelve:

After you have cleaned the CPU and GPU heat sinks you will need to REPLACE the thermal compound. Again, if you need to purchase the thermal compound, you can find it at almost any local computer shop or you can purchase it off eBay as well.

I wrap a piece of plastic bag around my finger and put only a dab (less than a dime size) of Thermal Compound on the tip of my finger and gently wipe the compound on the GPU and CPU. You just want to put a thin layer on it. You shouldn’t be able to see the shininess of the GPU and CPU.

Step Thirteen: Replace the X clamps

Now you need to take the screws off your Heat sink and replace them with some new screws and add some washers.

To remove the 4 pegs on each of the heat sinks use pliers or the correct wrench. Turn the screws counter clock wise to unscrew the pegs. You will not need these pegs any longer.

Step Fourteen: Secure motherboard with bolts.

This the order you need to secure your heat sinks to your motherboard: Zinc plated washer, nylon washer, motherboard, nylon washer, zinc plated washer.

You need to attach both heat sinks to the motherboard.Put a metal washer first then a nylon washer and then insert the bolt into the mother board and now add another nylon washer and then another metal washer for all 4 holes. Now align the heat sink and bolts together and hand tighten the bolts to the motherboard, make sure no to over tighten the bolts.

Step Fifteen: Secure the thermal compound bond.

Put your motherboard back into the metal case and attach DVD drive and plug it in. Next attach the RF module and the white plastic cover. Do not put your fan back yet.

Now plug you Xbox 360 power and av cable and turn on your Xbox. To turn it on poke the copper button on the middle of the RF module. Your Xbox will show the 3 red light error for about 1min 30 sec or so then it will only light up the 2 left red lights which means your Xbox is over heating which is exactly what we want because we need the thermal compound to melt a little so that the GPU, CPU and heat sinks can make full contact.

As soon as only the 2 left red lights are on wait 1 min to 1min 30sec and then unplug you Xbox and remove the DVD drive and the RF module. Be Very Careful not to burn yourself. Your Xbox will be HOT.

Use a towel and remove your motherboard from the metal case. Now you will tighten the bolts that replaced the X clamps. Use pliers or the correct sized socket and tighten all the bolts, do not tighten them so hard that you snap your motherboard.

Now its time to let your Xbox to completely cool down. Wait 20-30 min or longer if the room is warm.

Step Sixteen:

Reassemble your Xbox 360. its pretty dang easy.

You can now plug in the Xbox 360 and turn it on

Hopefully your Xbox 360 works and you can now have the comfort of knowing you saved a ton of money by not sending in the console to Microsoft! The 3 red lights error most likely will not happen again, but if it does you now have the knowledge of how to fix it. Please play the Xbox 360 on low settings for at least 20 days so it can set up and cure. Enjoy!

XBOX 3 Red Lights Repair
